Cosmetic microdermabrasion is a controlled, mechanical removal of the upper horny cells or cell layers.
Microdermabrasion is therefore not only an intensive exfoliation, but also ensures optimal regeneration and cell renewal deep within the skin. This is visible in a finer, smoother, more even skin texture.
2. How does the microdermabrasion function of the MICRO Peeler & Sonic work?
With the help of a vacuum system or a vacuum pump, fine ion crystals are directed from the fresh crystal container via the handpiece onto the skin. When the crystals hit the skin, excess skin cells are removed. The crystals are then sucked off together with the dissolved horny cells using negative pressure and fed into the old crystal container.
3. Application spectrum of microdermabrasion
The range of applications of microdermabrasion is very diverse. The controlled removal of the upper cell layers results in the increased formation of young, functional new skin cells in the basal cell layer of the skin. These migrate to the surface and gradually replace the removed cell material.
Cosmetic microdermabrasion promotes the renewal of skin cells when used in a controlled, course-like manner and thus improves the density and structure of the dermis and epidermis.
This is because the fibroblasts in the connective tissue also receive the impulse to form new collagen and elastin fibers by removing horny cells from the surface.
By supporting the natural regeneration process, microdermabrasion can achieve positive, lasting results for a wide range of indications.
Microdermabrasion is therefore suitable for the following skin types/conditions:

- Tired skin in need of regeneration
- Poorly perfused skin, smoker's skin
- Atrophic skin
- Skin with barrier damage
- Large-pored, scarred skin (after acne has healed)
- Wrinkles, loss of tone and elasticity
- Blemished skin, comedone acne, acne tarda
- Superficial hyperpigmentation
- Hyperkeratinization
- Stretch marks, striae
In general, removing the upper cell layers increases the skin's absorption capacity.
Microdermabrasion is therefore an ideal way to prepare the skin so that active ingredients can be applied to the skin as part of a professional treatment.

4. How does the skin react to microdermabrasion?
A temporary feeling of dryness and redness may occur after the treatment. In very rare cases, slight bleeding into the tissue may occur. Depending on the condition of the skin, the redness will subside within a few hours. If the redness does not subside after 24 hours, the customer should contact her BABOR expert. Her dermatologist may need to be consulted.
In the case of underlayment, there may initially be a "blooming", i.e. an initial aggravation.
5. What should be considered after microdermabrasion?
After microdermabrasion, the skin needs 2 - 3 days to fully rebuild the natural skin barrier and thus the skin's own protective function.
During this time, the customer must do without the following things:
- Prolonged exposure to the sun or solarium
- Heavy sweating (e.g. when visiting a sauna)
- Other abrasive or chemical peels
- Hair removal in the treated areas
- Self-tanner
- Swimming pool visits (chlorinated water/sea water)
During a treatment course with microdermabrasion, a sun protection product with a very high sun protection factor, e.g. from the DOCTOR BABOR SOLAR DEFENSE range, should be used during the day.
After completing the treatment, we recommend sun protection during the day for a further 14 - 21 days.
After a single microdermabrasion treatment, sun protection should be applied for the following 7 days.
Microdermabrasion is contraindicated in certain cases.
The following list shows the most common contraindications (source: Iontocomed):
- for herpes (herpes prophylaxis is recommended for customers who are prone to herpes)
- for couperose / rosacea (treatment possible after consultation with a dermatologist)
- for cancers and tumors
- Psoriasis with Köbner phenomenon
- for acute neurodermatitis (treatment possible in "symptom-free" periods depending on severity)
- locally on warts, moles and birthmarks
- on keloids (bulge scars)
- when taking cortisone, glucocorticoids
- when taking anti-acne medication, such as Roaccutane, and 12 months afterwards, depending on the dosage and time taken
- for pathological, inflammatory skin conditions or lesions of the skin caused by bacteria, mycoses or viruses
- for active bacterial or viral infections, fever
- for autoimmune diseases (e.g. vitiligo)
- for unstable diabetics
- after chemical peelings, peeling treatments
• after fruit acid peeling / peeling treatment: 2 - 4 weeks break
• after TCA peeling: at least 6 weeks break
• after phenol peeling: at least 8 weeks break
- after cosmetic surgery in consultation with the doctor
- after injections in consultation with the doctor
- after laser treatments in consultation with the doctor
- For Fitzpatrick skin types IV - VI (Indian/African), deep microdermabrasion is not recommended to avoid pigment shifts.
- if you are taking Marcumar or other blood-thinning medication
- with long-term use of aspirin
We do not recommend carrying out microdermabrasion treatments during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as the skin is more sensitive and more sensitive to light during this time and undesirable side effects can occur due to hormonal changes.
If in doubt, always consult your doctor.
7. The BABOR TECH microdermabrasion programs
The intensity of the microdermabrasion function is controlled by the following parameters:
1. Dosage
Regulates the amount of crystals that reach the skin and thus the intensity of removal.
Remember! The lower the dosage, the stronger the abrasive effect!
2. Vacuum
Regulates the suction strength with which crystals and dissolved horny flakes are sucked away from the skin.
For optimum treatment results, the BABOR TECH MICRO Peeler & Sonic offers a range of pre-set programs with optimum dosage and vacuum settings to suit a wide variety of skin types/conditions and treatment goals:

Refining crystals are ion crystals - a compound of the chemical element aluminum with oxygen.
Ion crystals have the following properties due to their crystalline structure:
- very hard (Mohs hardness 9)
- Melting point of 2045°C
- chemically inert
Position of the customer
The client's head is positioned for the treatment of each facial area in such a way that work can be carried out optimally.
Handpiece guide
Work back and forth in slow, concentrated strokes (approx. 2 - 3 cm). Depending on the treatment goal, skin thickness and skin condition, you can perform each stroke 2 - 4 times. Tension the skin very well and glide the handpiece over the skin without applying pressure and without settling. Ensure that the glass tip is in even contact with the skin so that no foreign air is sucked in (vacuum loss).

Always treat each part of the face directly one after the other on the left and right side in order to achieve a very even result. Do not skip any areas of skin unless this is desired, e.g. because there is a localized inflammation or contraindication in this area.
If possible, work on the right side with the right hand and the left side with the left hand.
If the skin sensitivity allows, you should treat areas with more keratinized skin or lines/wrinkles lengthwise and crosswise (checkerboard pattern).
Remove any crystals remaining on the skin from time to time with a brush.
Microdermabrasion - Face
Work from top to bottom and from the inside to the outside in the following order and in the specified working direction, stroke by stroke (approx. 2 - 3 cm) as evenly as possible and without settling:

|
1. Forehead 2. Frown lines in a checkerboard pattern 3. Temple 4. Crow's feet in a checkerboard pattern 5. upper cheek area up to in front of the ears 6. Nose - build up skin tension by applying pressure to the tip of the nose 7. above the upper lip - build up skin tension by turning the lips inwards - and nasolabial folds 8. lower cheek area up to the jawline 9. Chin 10. Jawline - build up skin tension by positioning the client in a lateral position with the chin slightly overstretched upwards 11. below the chin - build up skin tension by slightly stretching the client's chin upwards Finally, check the overall result and rework any areas of skin that do not appear to have been optimally treated. |
|
|
|
|
Microdermabrasion - neck and décolleté
Work from top to bottom and from the inside to the outside in the following order and in the specified working direction, stroke by stroke (approx. 2 - 3 cm) as evenly as possible and without settling:

|
12. Neck - build up skin tension by positioning the client on her side and slightly stretching her chin upwards 13. Neckline 14. Chequerboard décolleté pleat Finally, check the overall result and rework any areas of skin that do not appear to have been optimally treated. |
|
|
|
|
Microdermabrasion - Scar treatment
Tension the skin intensively and work very slowly and with concentration, as evenly as possible and without settling:

|
1. directly on the scar with as many repetitions as necessary until lymph flow occurs. - For acne scars: in small circles - for flat scars / striae: back and forth in slow strokes
2. in the immediate area around the scar with only a few repetitions so as not to put too much strain on the normal tissue. - For acne scars: in small circles around the scar - for flat scars / striae: in lines 2 - 3 cm long around the scar |
|
|
Acne scar |
flat scar / striae |
|
|
|
The optimal duration of microdermabrasion varies from person to person. As a rule, 10 minutes are required for microdermabrasion of the face; a further 10 minutes for the neck and décolleté.
11. cure treatment recommendations
You will always achieve maximum results with microdermabrasion treatments if you follow a complete treatment course (6 - 10 treatments at a set frequency in conjunction with optimal home care). The best time for the treatments is when your customers are less likely to be exposed to the sun.
Of course, individual treatments or reduced cure offers are also possible. Please note that there should be a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 14 days between individual treatments during a cure.
Refer to the detailed treatment instructions for the corresponding recommendations according to skin type/condition.

Ultrasound refers to vibrations that are above the hearing threshold for the human ear, i.e. higher than 20,000 Hz.
Ultrasound is produced when high-frequency electrical vibrations are converted into mechanical vibrations. Ultrasound waves spread through the soft tissues of the body. The energy introduced into the body in this way causes every particle of the body being treated to vibrate. Part of the energy absorbed is converted into heat.
A general distinction is made between the following effects of ultrasound:
Mechanical effect
The permanently alternating positive and negative pressure phases cause minimal changes in the shape of the cells in the tissue and thus create a deep-acting micro-massage.

- Promotes cell metabolism, blood circulation and oxygen supply
- Promotion of diffusion processes
- Removal of metabolic degradation products from cells and tissue through increased membrane permeability
- Activation of the lymph flow
- Stimulation of fibroblast activity in the connective tissue
- Loosening of the uppermost skin layers
Thermal effect
The ultrasonic vibrations generate friction and thus tissue heating.

- Increased blood circulation
- Vascular dilation and strengthening of the vascular profile
- Metabolic activation
- Lymph flow promotion
- Increase in enzymatic activities
- Muscle relaxation
Biochemical effect
Activation of a variety of biochemical reactions.

- Increase in ATP activity as the most important energy supplier of cell metabolism
- Increasing the permeability of cell membranes
- Inhibition of enzymes that break down connective tissue
- Stimulation of fibroblast activity in the connective tissue
Phonophorese
Easier penetration of active ingredients into deeper skin layers due to improved diffusion through changing ultrasound pressure.
2. Parameters of the ultrasound
The effect and penetration depth of the ultrasound are determined by the parameters frequency, intensity, type of sonication (mode), treatment time and type of tissue to be treated as follows:
Frequency
Definition of Oscillation per second (unit: Hz)
Examples 1 Hz = 1 oscillation per second
1 MHz = 1 million oscillations per second
3 MHz = 3 million oscillations per second
10 MHz = 10 million oscillations per second

|
The frequency of the ultrasonic waves determines the wavelength and the penetration depth as the so-called half-value depth (distance at which the sound intensity still has 50 % of the incident energy). |
|||
|
|
1 MHz = |
Wavelength 1,5 mm (λ1) |
→ approx. 3 cm half depth |
|
|
3 MHz = |
Wavelength 0,5 mm (λ3) |
→ approx. 1 cm half depth |
|
|
10 MHz = |
Wavelength 0,15 mm (λ10) |
→ approx. 0,3 cm half depth |
|
|
|||
Remember! The higher the frequency, the smaller the wave spacing (λ1 ) and the smaller the half-value depth. And vice versa!
|
Intensity |
||
|
Definition |
Sound power that passes through a sound-permeable surface per unit area or the energy introduced per time per surface (unit: W/cm²) |
|
|
low |
0.1 - 0.3 W/cm² |
Promotion of regeneration, cell activity - over bone protrusions |
|
medium |
0,4 – 0,8 W/cm² |
- optimal for increasing membrane permeability and fibroblast activity |
|
high |
0,8 – 2,0 W/cm² |
- Stimulation of the fatty tissue - Promotion of regeneration - for deep tissue structures |
How do the frequency and intensity of an ultrasound wave affect the skin?
The fluctuation amplitude, i.e. the particle movement through the amplitude, depends on the frequency and intensity. It influences the permeability of the cell membranes.
Note! The fluctuation amplitude and thus the influence on the permeability of the cell membranes decreases with increasing frequency.
Sound waves create pressure differences in the tissue, which generate the mechanical massage effect of ultrasound in the tissue. The fluctuation amplitude of a sound wave shows the maximum increase or decrease in pressure.
The number of pressure fluctuations depends on the frequency.
Examples 1 MHz: 1 million pressure fluctuations per second
3 MHz: 3 million pressure fluctuations per second
10 MHz: 10 million pressure fluctuations per second
Note! The number of pressure fluctuations and thus the intensity of the mechanical effect increases with increasing frequency.
Mode
Definition sound type
Continuous sound Mode: 1:1 (cont.)
Sound waves are emitted continuously with the same intensity.
Target: -Tissue heating to increase blood circulation
Impulse sound Mode: 1:3 / 1:5 / 1:10
The transmission pulses of the sound waves are interrupted periodically.
Goals: - Avoidance of hyperemia in skin conditions where heat development and stimulation of blood circulation are undesirable (e.g. skin irritations)
- Avoidance of overheating at higher intensities
Please note! The thermal effect is significantly lower with impulse sound.
3. Application spectrum of ultrasound
Ultrasound treatments are suitable for the following skin conditions - especially as part of a spa treatment:

- Folds
- Loss of resilience and elasticity
- Blemished skin
- Stressed, tired skin with poor circulation
- Atrophic skin
- Sensitive, irritated skin
- Vascularly labile skin
- Atrophic scars / acne scars
- Stretch marks / Striae
- Cellulite
In consultation with the attending physician, ultrasound applications are ideal for pre- and post-surgical care, such as eyelid lifting, face lifting, injections and liposuction, or before and after medical laser applications.
Ultrasound applications can optimally support the surgical results with the specified number and frequency of treatments.
In general, only healthy people may be treated with ultrasound.
Ultrasound treatment is contraindicated in certain cases. The following lists the most common contraindications (source: Iontocomed):
Ultrasound must not be used on any part of the body if the following diseases or conditions are present:
- Heart disease and pacemakers
- Cancer, cancer treatments and malignant tumors or suspected malignant tumors
- Diseases of the nervous system, such as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis
- Implanted insulin pump
Please do not treat the following areas of the body with ultrasound:
- Brain
- Spinal cord
- Eyes and eyelids
- Thyroid gland
- Gonads (breast, ovaries, ...)
- Heart
- Bone growth zones in children and adolescents
General contraindications:
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding
- Bacterial infections (e.g. boils, carbuncles, tuberculosis)
- Feverish conditions and acute inflammatory symptoms (e.g. sunburn)
- In the area of skin damage (e.g. open wounds, inflammation)
- Fresh surgical scars (in consultation with the doctor)
- Vascular diseases, such as thromboses
- Blood clotting disorders
- Areas of the body with severe circulatory disorders

Sound head guidance
In general, we distinguish between dynamic (paths or spirals) and semi-static transducer guidance (circles).
Dynamic sound head guidance:
- for extensive treatment (e.g. cheeks, forehead, body, ...)
- slow, concentrated transducer guidance in tracks or small spiral movements / circles in the direction of lymph drainage
- can be executed with 1, 3 and / or 10 MHz

|
Legend |

Railroad without pressure |
|
|
Spiral / Circle |
Semi-static transducer guidance:
- for local, intensive treatment of problem areas (e.g. pustules, irritations, scars, ...)
- The transducer is moved slowly over the problem area for a maximum of 10 - 15 seconds per skin area with semi-static circles, i.e. standing circles.
- is executed with 3 and 10 MHz

|
|
Semi-static circularization |
Follow the professional BABOR recommendations regarding the transducer guidance according to the skin area to be treated and the respective ultrasound program according to the treatment objective. Please also refer to pages 18 - 25 under point 5.
In general, please note the following:
- Move the transducer constantly on the surface of the skin and never treat while resting on one point for a long time (static sonication), as otherwise tissue damage cannot be ruled out.
- Make sure that the transducer always lies flat on the skin.
- If possible, work on the right side with the right hand and the left side with the left hand.
- Apply TECH CELLULAR Ultrasound Transmission Gel generously with a brush to the skin area to be treated before attaching the transducer.
I: LYMPHACTIVATION - face and neck
Sound head guidance: dynamic
- Slow, concentrated strokes from the center of the face with gentle pressure outwards and without pressure and back quickly

|
1. Stimulate the lymph on both sides (first the right side, then the left side) by stroking the side of the neck from below the ears (profundus) to the collarbone (terminus) with gentle pressure. Repeat 3 times. 2. Now start with the right side of the face Take 2 of the following routes and return to the starting point: a. from the chin below the jawline to in front of the ears b. from the center of the chin over the cheeks to in front of the ears (include lips) c. from above the mouth area below the cheekbone along to in front of the ears d. from next to the wings of the nose over the cheekbone to in front of the ears e. from the center of the forehead over the temples in 2 tracks to the front of the ears Always apply gentle pressure from the center of the face outwards; slide back without applying pressure. Treat the left side of the face in the same way. 3. Glide from the ears along the side cords of the neck to the collarbone (terminus) and then repeat grip 1. Repeat 3 times. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
II: LOCAL INTENSIVE TREATMENT - Face
Sound head guidance: dynamic
- Slow, concentrated trajectories or circles
The following areas can be processed as required:

|
1. Contour shift 2. Nasolabial fold 3. Tension the skin of the upper lip 4. Glide under the eyes from the inside outwards to the front of the ears. From there, glide over the sides of the neck to the collarbone (terminus). Repeat at least 2 more times. 5. Crow's feet / eye wrinkles 6. Pull the frown line 7. Forehead wrinkles 8. Glide from the last treated area to the point in front of the ears and glide back along the lateral cords of the neck to the collarbone (terminus). |
III: SCAR TREATMENT
Transducer guidance: semi-static
- Semi-static circles over a maximum of 10 - 15 seconds per area

Scar
|
1. directly on the scar / scarring (acne scars) 2. to the right and left of the scar (surgical scars / injuries) |
|
IV: DÉCOLLETÉ TREATMENT
Sound head guidance: dynamic

|
1. Slow, concentrated strokes from the center of the décolleté with gentle pressure outwards and back without pressure 2. Work out décolleté folds with intensive spirals If only the décolleté is treated without the face, always start by activating the lymph on the side of the neck from below the ears to the collarbone 3 times per side. |
|
V: ABDOMINAL TREATMENT
Sound head guidance: dynamic
- slow, concentrated tracks + spirals

|
1. Glide in tracks on the right and left side of the abdomen from below the ribcage with gentle pressure to the groin and back without pressure. 2. Work the entire abdominal wall (leaving out the navel) with concentrated spirals using gentle pressure from below the costal arches to the groin and back in a single path without pressure. |
|
VI: BODY TREATMENT
Sound head guidance: dynamic
- Slow, concentrated tracks
Supine position

|
Right leg 1. Activate the lymph by moving inwards along the groin with pressure and back again without pressure. 2. Thighs Then treat the left leg in the same way. |
|
Prone position (optional)

|
Left buttock half 3. Glide in parallel tracks with pressure from the center outwards and back without pressure. Start below the buttock crease and end at the waist. Repeat each path 3 times. |
|
Supine position

|
4. Repeat activation of the lymph analogous to 1. |
